About “Mr. Gwiji” by Samtaar: The Song
My name is Samuel Njuguna a Kenyan artiste better known by my stage name “Samtaar”. I have recorded a number of songs that address issues relevant to the younger generation. Most of my music is done in Swahili- a language that is easily understood by the various youth from different backgrounds and varied ages. One of the songs I have recorded recently is ‘Mr. Gwiji’.

The song MR GWIJI, produced at Ogopa Deejays – one of Kenya’s premier music recording studios- is a socially conscientious song warning the society against drug and substance abuse. It highlights three issues: by chastising drug barons over a lifestyle they flaunt at the expense of others’ lives, talking to youths over the repercussions and expresses parents’ sentiment as well as the society at large, that is, the desire for a world free from drugs and substances

The ironical title Mr.‘Gwiji’ is derived from Swahili noun that means hodari or shujaa or mtaalamu (someone who has gained notoriety in a certain field, or skill). A ‘Gwiji’ would ordinarily be a very wealthy and influential person in society

This character in this song, Mr.Gwiji is involved in drug and substances deals. The song elucidates his dubious but affluent character, highly value and esteem with which the society regards him.

One day it all goes haywire when Mr. Gwiji gets into a disagreement with his wife after she finds him with mistresses in their home. He in turn batters her. The commotion attracts neighbors. It is at this point that the wife becomes impatient. She candidly spills the beans over Gwiji’s illegal trade deals. Mr. Gwiji is exposed as a drug baron.

The society is in a shock after the story comes to the limelight. Parents can no longer hold their anger and bay for Gwiji’s blood. The future of their sons and daughters has been devastated.
Who has been protecting these alleged drug barons? The rhetoric question is; whom shall we report to? Is it the policeman or the Judiciary?

The song brings to the limelight another social problem in a society badly ravaged by violence against women.

lyrics

Chorus
Mr Gwiji has in actual fact annoyed his wife today by battering her in public
The ANGRY wife yells at him “MR GWIJI YOU ARE A DRUG DEALER.

Verse 1
Mr Gwiji was highly regarded with esteem and value in the society. He rapidly progressed in many aspects and especially financially. He drove luxurious cars and invested in real estate. Little did people know the source of all his wealth. “Ooh no MR GWIJI! You are a dubious character! Your wealth was not legitimately acquired.”

Chorus
Mr. Gwiji has in actual fact annoyed his wife today by battering her in public
The ANGRY wife yells at him “MR GWIJI YOU ARE A DRUG DEALER.

(Verse 2)
Your deadly drugs are so addictive that our youth’s lives have been badly ravaged. Some have been turned to zombies. Parents are in enormous grief each day over the lives of their children. They have sworn to deal with you harshly. There is little hope for a brighter future of their children. “Ooh no MR GWIJI! You are a dubious character! Your wealth was not legitimately acquired.”

Chorus
Mr Gwiji has in actual fact annoyed his wife today by battering her in public
The ANGRY wife yells at him “MR GWIJI YOU ARE A DRUG DEALER.

Verse 3
We have finally caught you MR. GWIJI and therefore we are not going to leave not until you disclose your accomplices.
But whom shall we turn to?
Is it the Police?
or
The judiciary?

Chorus
Mr Gwiji has in actual fact annoyed his wife today by battering her in public
The ANGRY wife yells at him “MR GWIJI YOU ARE A DRUG DEALER.

“MR GWIJI YOU ARE A DRUG DEALER
“MR GWIJI YOU ARE A DRUG DEALER
